Where Do Paintings Come From?

I wonder about the origin of inspiration. People often say that they are inspired by nature. I like plants, I like animals and birds, and I like to look around me in my daily life on a small horse farm. What I see must have some effect, but what it is , is not clear to me. I love to see the stars when I go to the barn at night to make sure that everyone is safe and comfortable.
In some of my paintings I see the impact of nature upon my imagination. I have painted the insects buzzing above the grass . I have painted the summer rain. I have painted the green lawn of my childhood. I realize that my paintings remind me of these things afterwards. The titles will come later. Is this inspiration?
When I am painting, I must make decisions about everything that goes in to making a painting- colors, shapes, and brushstrokes. I think. Sometimes I think and think and think. Sometimes I walk up to that painting and I just do something to it; and sometimes it is right on! It feels inspired.
